Lawrence County Sheriff's Office Cracks Down on Impaired Drivers

07/09/2012

Missouri roads are safer, thanks to law enforcement cracking down on impaired drivers and working to make sure motorists think twice about traffic safety over the Fourth of July weekend.

The Lawrence County Sheriff's Office participated in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over crackdown conducted July 3-8.  During the enforcement effort, officers issued a total of 17 traffic tickets including:  two driving while intoxicated arrests, eight speeding tickets, one child restraint ticket, one suspended license ticket, and three uninsured motorist tickets.  Two felony arrests were made as a result of the crackdown.  Deputies also issued 82 warnings for various other traffic infractions.

"When we remove a drunk driver from the roads, we're all safer," stated Sheriff Brad DeLay.  "Law Enforcement will continue to encourage drivers to make a simple, smart choice to drive sober."

Driving while intoxicated remains one of the top causes of fatal car crashes in Missouri.  In 2011, 220 people were killed and 902 seriously injured in crashes involving an impaired driver.
