Sheriff Asks Citizens to Be on Alert

03/30/2012

Sheriff Brad DeLay is asking Lawrence County citizens to be on alert after two similar incidents have occurred in two days.

Two incidents north of Pierce City have been reported to the Sheriff's Office that could have potential been very serious for local residents.

On two separate occasions two males, one white and one Hispanic have approached local residents claiming to be from the local rural electric cooperative.  These suspects are there on the premise that the resident has overpaid their electric bill and they are there with a refund.

The suspects then ask the resident to go into their home and cash a check or make change for a large bill.  Both times the people are told not to enter the residence but end up following the victims inside.  On one occasion it is believed that items may have been stolen from inside the residence.

No one has been hurt but the Sheriff advises they very well could have been.  The Sheriff's Office has contacted area electric cooperatives and the confirm that they have no one in the area doing that and they do not operate in that fashion.

The suspects are believed to be driving a black or dark color full size pickup possibly a Chevrolet.  The Sheriff's Office encourages residents to call 911 if they see a similar type vehicle or any suspicious activity in the area.  The Sheriff also advises citizens to not approach the suspects or suspect vehicles.
