Sheriff's Office goes live with new NPLEX system

09/29/2010

The Lawrence County Sheriff's Office has gone live with the new NPLEX (National Precursor Log Exchange) system.  Effective September 28, 2010 pharmacies that sell over-the-counter cold and allergy medications containing ephedrine, pseudo-ephedrine, and/or phenylpropanolaine products are required to participate in the statewide program.

This is the next step in the battle against methamphetamine.  The system is used in real time.  When a person who comes into a pharmacy tries to purchase medicine and goes over the legal limit, officers can be notified immediately.  It will now be much harder if not impossible for those using the precursors for meth to "smurf".  Officers can also now track suspected drug makers purchases of the precursors.

This system will is also linked to participating states so not only can we track instate purchases but also out of state purchases.
